A Movie Review: Australia

A few weeks back I went to see the movie Australia.  As I don’t watch much TV and don’t go to the movies much, I really didn’t know what to expect.  I kinda figured it would be a good movie but that was just a feeling.  So I am much more comfortable with commentary on books, but this is what I have to say about the movie.

Overall I think it was very well done.  It’s a historical fiction movie with a classic “good vs. evil” plot and several “sub-plots.”  I’m not sure if that’s the right word, but you get the idea (I hope).  I was really impressed with the content of the plot and the way the Aborigine traditions were woven into the fabric of the story.  It is so amazing to me to see how in touch with the land these people really were.  And the use of song to speak to the land is quite beautiful.  The characters were dynamic and it was interesting to see the way they developed throughout the movie.  It was so sad to see the way the Aborigine people were treated and even more sobering to realize that it was only in the 1970s that the Australian government stopped trying to cleanse their land of them.  But then again, our record on that front isn’t any better.  It was also nice because though there is romance in the movie, it isn’t so focused on the romance that all else is irrelevant.  The romance is a part of the story but not the story in and of itself.  I would caution you that it is along movie so be prepared for numbness!
